Old and Grateful

Meazi loves birthdays- hers, mine, yours, everyone's. Today is my birthday. About two months ago she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and what I was going to wish for. I had to pause and fight back tears. I looked into her eyes and said,

"Meazi, every year, for the past ten years, I have wished for one thing. I have that now, and there is nothing else that I want, nothing."

"What did you wish for Mommy?" she asked.

"I wished for children."

"And now you have us?" she said.

"And now I have you and Melese, and there is nothing else that I want."

She smiled. Then she said, "Mommy, your wish came true. I will make your wish for you this year."

I am guessing my new wish involves a certain statue, in a certain big city.

Just a suspicion.

Meazi and her baby brother Melese....

Truly the best gifts I have ever received.

Lucky, lucky me.

  4. Happy, happy birthday, Julie. I could not relate more to this post. Every birthday for the past six years felt like I was slipping closer to some childless abyss. Now, I say, bring the b-days on! We are moms, at last. And you are a most wonderful one, with two most amazing children. Happy day, soak it up, you deserve this happiness so very much!

  35. Julie, I can very much relate to that post!! My birthday is this month too and when I looked back to what I posted last year on my birthday, it brought back so much sadness. I can't possibly ask for anything better than what I have this year.

And if you decide to come to Dr. Labootie, let us know. We're only a few hours drive from NYC!!

  36. Happy Birthday, Mama. They are so beautiful. I just got my birthday wish: assigned a court date. :)

Remember to tell us east coasters if you end up going to Dr. Labootie, because we'd love to congregate and welcome you with open arms.

  37. Nice, Julie. I'm just trying to cruise through my morning blogs and enjoy the sweet sentiment...and this post. I am now crying, husband is curious, and I am so filled with emotion. What a lovely post! Your wish for so many years has come true and the absolute wonder and kindness of Meazi's little soul to offer to make a wish for you just sent me over the edge. Your family inspires me every day to look forward to the bright sunsets and sunrises of motherhood. Thanks for being so real and honest and heartfelt. For showing that motherhood isn't all rosy perfection but it is everything that a mom would wish for. I hope your birthday was oh so merry!
